Dr. Jessica Turner (Psychology)
Dr. Turner's projects are geared toward understanding the structural and functional underpinnings of various disorders. Current projects using the ARCTIC system include the analysis of hundreds of individuals from a public dataset, some of whom have Alzheimer's Disease, and others do not. Alzheimer's Disease is a form of dementia which involves atrophy in the hippocampus and other parts of the brain. While machine learning algorithms can sometimes predict from the brain image whether the person's cognitive abilities are affected, most of these analyses have been performed in homogenous datasets. We are specifically assessing whether predictions created on one set of individuals can generalize to other individuals (e.g., who differ by sex or racial identity) so that we know which results are robust and which might be affected by individual differences.
